What Is the NMMSS Scholarship?
NMMSS is a central government scholarship for bright students from economically weaker families. Many good students drop out after Class 8 because of money problems. This scheme helps them continue their studies till Class 12.
Every year, one lakh fresh scholarships are given to Class 9 students who pass the selection exam conducted by their State or UT government. The scholarship then continues from Class 10 to Class 12 through renewal, if the student meets the academic requirements.
NMMSS Eligibility Criteria 2026-27
Check these points before you apply:
- You must study in a state government, government-aided or local body school.
- You must have qualified the NMMSS selection exam of your State/UT.
- To appear in the exam, you need at least 55% marks or equivalent grade in Class 7.
- SC/ST students get 5% relaxation, so 50% is enough.
- Your parents’ annual income must not be more than Rs. 3.50 lakh.
- For renewal, you must meet the academic conditions of the scheme.

How to Apply for NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27 Online
- Visit NSP: Open the official National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in.
- Complete OTR: Do the One-Time Registration (OTR) first. You cannot apply without it.
- Login: Use your OTR ID and password.
- Select scheme: Choose National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS).
- Fill the form: Enter personal, school, family income and bank details carefully.
- Upload documents: Upload clear scans in the correct size and format.
- Submit: Click final submit and download the acknowledgement slip.
- Get verification: Meet your school’s Nodal Officer and get your form verified before 15 November 2026.
Why L1 and L2 Verification Is Important
Many students submit the form and then forget the next step. After you apply, your form goes to the Institute Nodal Officer (L1) and then to the District Nodal Officer (L2). If it is not verified, it can be rejected and you will not get the money. So after applying, follow up with your school and make sure verification is done on time.
Example: How NMMSS Works
This is only an example for better understanding.
Riya is a Class 9 student in a government school. She scored 58% in Class 7, her family income is ₹2.8 lakh a year, and she cleared her state’s NMMSS exam. In October she completes OTR, fills the NMMSS form on NSP, uploads her documents and gives the acknowledgement slip to her school nodal officer. Once L1 and L2 verification is complete, her ₹12,000 scholarship comes to her bank account through DBT.
Tips for Students
- Do not wait for the last day. Apply early to avoid website problems.
- Keep your name and date of birth the same as in Aadhaar and school records.
- Make sure your bank account is active and ready for DBT.
- Save your OTR ID and password for renewal in the coming years.
- Ask your school to complete L1 verification quickly.
